Think of it like sunscreen.
Like a blanket.
Like a silent promise: I see you. I will help you through this.
How to proceed – With patience and respect.
The method is simple, but well thought out:
Paint: Ordinary water-based latex paint (never oil-based, as it can suffocate the bark).
Dilution: One part paint to one part water. The paint should be fluid enough to allow the bark to breathe, but thick enough to protect it.
Application: A soft brush, or sometimes a sprayer for orchards. It is essential to always cover the trunk evenly, especially the south and west sides, which receive the most intense winter sun.
Frequency:
Only once a year, usually in late autumn, before the hard frosts.
The paint washes off with the spring rains, and the tree no longer needs it.
